Women Helping Women
“If ever there comes a time when the women of the world come together purely and simply for the benefit of mankind, it will be a force such as the world has never seen.” Matthew Arnold 19th Century
Our Outreach Efforts include three areas of concentration:
1) South Austin Pregnancy Resource Center
Overview of SAPRC: “The purpose of SAPRC is to provide education, love and support to women in our community as they make important pregnancy decisions. They offer counsel on the emotional, spiritual and physical aspects of pregnancy and information concerning available options.”
How can you get involved: 1) volunteer at the center in various capacities, such as, cleaning, sorting, or setting up the boutique; 2) give financially; 3) donate items needed; and/or 4) become a client advocate-counseling the women that come to the center.
Most needed donations: 1) diapers in sizes 2-5; 2) baby clothing in sizes newborn up to 2T; 3) maternity clothes; 4) Baby Wipes; 5) office supplies ( stamps, envelopes, any basic office supply); and 6) cleaning supplies.
2) River City Hope Street
Overview of Hope Street: “Our vision is for Austin to be transformed by connecting individuals, churches, and organizations expressing the power of God’s love through practical, life changing ministries.”
“Hope Street is breaking the cycle of poverty through…personal transformation, family transformation and community transformation.”
“As CWJC matured, the Lord added additional ministry opportunities and has given the vision for community development and restoration in low income areas of Austin. In 2009 Hope Street Austin was established as an umbrella organization to support the different ministry areas: CWJC (Christian Women’s Job Corp), His Storehouse (food, furniture), Career Closet, The Green Acre and Simple Churches.”
How can you get involved:
Simple Churches – these are churches led by ordinary Christians who are willing to provide spiritual truth to people who are not comfortable in traditional church settings. This includes children’s activities, a family meal, Bible study, prayer and worship. You can join an existing church in those areas of service or form a new team of volunteers to provide outreach to an apartment complex in your neighborhood.
Teach – one of our life skills, job readiness training, ESL or GED classes. Training is provided for ESL or GED tutors and an orientation for teaching adult learners for all other volunteers.
Mentor – a child or adult.
Career Closet – volunteers to sort clothing, host participants on visits to the Career Closet, or solicit items and /or funding for the Career Closet.
Community Events – assist parents with providing holiday celebrations for their children. These are seasonal events.
Green Acre – Volunteers are needed to build out gardens and aquaponics for our Urban Farm. Volunteers are also needed to assist in developing micro-businesses at the Green Acre.
3) Restore the Innocent-Human Trafficking
Overview: “Did you know that even though the 13th amendment became a reality in 1865 we still have over 27 million slaves on earth today. Young girls raised in poverty are deceived by promises of jobs to leave their families and then captured, raped and forced into prostitution. It is not enough to just know about this injustice, we must respond. We believe we can best fight human trafficking through a collaboration of non-profits, faith communities, for profits and individuals pledging to restore justice to those in the chains of slavery.” To learn more visit: www.restoretheinnocent.org
